MAY 31ST – MEMORIAL DAY FOR THE VICTIMS OF POLITICAL REPRESSION
In Kazakhstan May 31st is Memorial Day for the victims of political repression, celebrated annually since 1997, on the basis of President’s Decree. This is the day remembering innocent losses during the era of Stalin Regime (starvation, massive repression, persecution and forced deportation of guiltless people).
There were the largest camp structures around Kazakhstan in XX century. During the repression, 100 thousand people were convicted, out of 25 thousand were applicable for Capital Punishment – to shoot down. Among those were scientists, activists in cultural and political movements.
